A key figure in the Romanian contemporary art scene, Comșa’s multifaceted practice explores the concept of ‘expanded painting,’

questioning the authority of the medium as a discipline that ‘speaks’ in a singular, coherent voice.

For an artist who employs unconventional, even painting-inappropriate strategies in his practice—who provocatively asserts that art is not

confined to the studio but emerges through everyday rituals, simple yet repetitive gestures, and actions that blur the line between art

and life—engaging with painting in an ‘dissonant’ manner becomes an act of defiance. It is a deliberate departure from established artistic

conventions, a rejection of the implicit agreements we have forged with the medium throughout history. To paint without adhering to a

predetermined structure is to resist the weight of tradition, to challenge the viewer’s conditioned expectations, and to undermine the

very principles that have long defined painting as a discipline.

Distilling ideas that have shaped his most recent exhibitions at CCA Tel Aviv-Yafo and SABOT gallery in Cluj-Napoca, Comșa invites the

viewer to engage with painting once more, not as a singular, stable image, but as a dynamic and evolving system of meanings and

references. At the intersection of color theory, geometry, language, music, and algorithmic logic, this exhibition pushes us toward a visual

experience that is both structured and elusive, methodical and instinctive. It aligns with principles found in group theory, where elements

combine and interact according to formalized relationships; it evokes the original etymological meaning of ‘archetype’—a primordial

model from which variations and deviations emerge; and it resonates with the fundamental ethos of concrete poetry, where language is

freed from its semantic constraints and treated as a material, sculptural entity. In “ANAGRAMA”, painting is not merely an act of

representation, nor even an act of abstraction, but rather an act of reconfiguration, where forms, colors, and rhythms operate in dynamic

interplay, pushing the very limits of what painting can be.
